SJTU T.D. LEE Science and Art Works Competition 2023: Call for Proposals

The SJTU T.D. LEE Science and Art Lecture Fund of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (hereinafter referred to as the Science and Art Fund) was established in 2013 to promote the integration of science and art and carry forward the spirit of science and art. The Science and Art Fund would organize a Science and Art Works Competition every year to encourage the creation of works of art based on scientific themes, and select outstanding scientific and art works from around the world to organize special exhibitions after review and evaluation. So far, 9 science and art works competitions and exhibitions have been successfully held.

The 10th Science and Art Works Competition starts officially in May 2023. This year’s theme is “Complexity and Simplicity”. After completing the collection and review of art works, it is planned to hold the “T.D. LEE Science and Art Works Exhibition — 2023 Complexity and Simplicity International Scientific Seminar” in November 2023. During the event, it will focus on the integration and innovation of science and art, facilitating interdisciplinary and college aesthetic education, cultivate students' innovative cogitation. The itinerant exhibition of science and art works will be held subsequently in China.

Awards

The Science and Art Works Competition sets up special, first, second and third prizes as well as outstanding awards in the form of bonuses (pre-tax) or prizes:

♦1 special prize, with a bonus of RMB 60,000;

♦2 first prizes with a bonus of RMB 30,000;

♦8 second prizes with a bonus of RMB 10,000;

♦16 third prizes with a bonus of RMB 5,000;

♦24 outstanding awards, with work certificates and commemorative prizes.

The above prize places can be vacant, subject to the results announced by the Grand Prix judges. The shortlisted works will be awarded certificates. At the same time, the winning works will be exhibited at the Tsung-Dao LEE Science and Art Exhibition.

Ownership

The winning works are owned by the SJTU T.D. LEE Science and Art Committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and will be used as the permanent collection of the Tsung-Dao LEE Science and Art Works Competition.

Requirement

Theme: TThe works should closely link to the “Complexity and Simplicity” scientific theme (see the explanation attached) and should be presented and embodied in appropriate art forms.
Category: Chinese paintings, oil paintings, sculptures, and other media (prints, watercolors, pastels, lacquer paintings, illustrations, comics, and etc.), or other types of works that combine science with art. Applicants should indicate the category of their works.
First round evaluation requirement:
1.The submitted work should be all kinds of artistic works that conform to the scientific themes of “Complexity and Simplicity” and has not participated in exhibitions above the municipal level.
2.Each applicant must submit no more than two works.
3.Size requirements for exhibiting works (including frame): graphic works: no less than 50 × 50 cm, no more than 180 (height) × 120 (width) cm; three-dimensional and spatial works: no more than 180 (height) × 180 (width) cm, weighing not more than 150 kilograms.
4.To submit works like videos, programs, devices, etc., you need to submit an operation manual, the corresponding software installation package, and the program as well.
5. You must log in to the competition registration system http://activity.lib.sjtu.edu.cn/keyi/index.aspx to register. Please submit photos or scans of works in jpg format, or video files of works in avi, rm, or mov formats, or electronic files of multimedia and software works (the files should not exceed 100MB) in the system or by e-mail. If you need to submit an attachment by mail, please send the work file (named as YYYY-MM-DD-name of the author-name of the work) to e-mails: keyi.TdLeelib@sjtu.edu.cn. Receive the reply email is regarded as successful submission.
The deadline for the electronic submission of works is September 1st., 2023. Shortlisted finalists should send the original works to the committee after receiving the notification by phone. The authors who are not short-listed will not be informed and their photos will not be returned.
Second round evaluation:
1.Please send the original works by September 15th to: No. 800, Dongchuan Road, Minhang District, Shanghai, 307 Office of Tsung-Dao LEE Library. Zip Code: 200240.
2.Graphic works must be self-assembled with frames; for sculptures or installations of three-dimensional works, the author must take care of their own transportation and installation issues. The author must negotiate with the organizing committee about the booth for 3D works.
3.Please specify in the lower right corner on the back of the work: the author’s name (according to the ID card), the name of your work, size, address, zip code, and telephone number.

Responsibility, rights and obligations

1、The organizer has the right to exhibit, research, photograph, videotape, publish and publicize the works in the competition.
2、Outstanding awards and non-winning works shall be retrieved within 3 months after the end of the exhibition by the participants themselves, or by a legal representative, or transport agent entrusted by the participants at their own expense from Tsung-Dao LEE Library of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The University does not deal with such procedures on Chinese statutory holidays and on summer and winter holiday.
3、After the deadline for retrieving outstanding awards and non-winning art works, the works that have not been taken back will be owned by the SJTU T.D. LEE Science and Art Committee.
4、Exemption clause:

        (一) If there are intellectual property defects or disputes in the award-winning work, the committee has the right to revoke the qualifications for the award, recall the awards and other honors, and recover the bonus. If there are intellectual property defects or disputes in the entries that cause economic and reputation losses to the organizer, the organizer reserves the right to demand compensation from the corresponding participants. The scope of compensation includes but is not limited to economic loss, reputation loss, litigation fees, attorney fees, preservation fees, appraisal fees, etc.

        (二) The committee will not bear any responsibility if the contestants are subsequently incorrectly publicized in events such as publicity, printing, and exhibitions due to incorrect information submitted by themselves.

        (三) The committee will not bear any responsibility for disputes between contestants, winners or other third parties due to participation in the Tsung-Dao LEE Science and Art Works Competition of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

        (四) The committee will not bear any responsibility for intentional damage caused by potential hazards such as fragility, scratching, peeling, corrosion, and complex structure of the work itself.

        (五) The outer packaging of all works are not within the safe custody of the committee. The committee will not bear any responsibility for damage or loss of the outer packaging.

        (六) The committee will not bear any responsibility for damage and loss in the process of sending and returning works.

        (七) The committee will not bear any responsibility for the loss or damage of the works during the evaluation, exhibition, moving, debugging and storage.

        (八) The committee is not liable for compensation if the work is lost or damaged due to natural disaster, war or national policy.

        (九) Once submitted, the contestants will agree to the above terms by default. The Committee reserves the right of final interpretation and adjudication.
